That's why the American Academy of Pediatrics advises never to give any over-the-counter (OTC) medications to children two years old or under without first talking to the child's doctor. Additionally, children under the age of 12 should never take aspirin without a doctor's approval because aspirin may lead to Reye's syndrome, a potentially fatal illness.
